Yesterday, Lucasfilm announced their plans for the future of Star Wars on the big screen with films coming out in December of 2022, 2024 and 2026. Sandwiched between Avatar films since Disney now owns Fox, the Star Wars films will be staggered and rumors have been spreading that the first new trilogy will be from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, hot off of Game of Thrones.
Indiana Jones will also return in a new film, starring Harrison Ford and directed by Steven Spielberg on July 9, 2021.
Meanwhile, those Avatar sequels that no one asked for will be coming in the alternate “off years” of December 2021, 2023, 2025, and 2027.
So the speculation begins regarding who’s trilogy comes first – the Benioff/Weiss trilogy or the Rian Johnson trilogy?
According to Entertainment Weekly, Kathleen Kennedy said of Benioff and Weiss, “As they finish Game of Thrones, they’re going to segue into Star Wars. They’re working very closely with Rian.”
To me, that kind of confirms it will be the Benioff/Weiss trilogy, especially since even the name Rian Johnson gets a certain demographic of Star Wars fans rage triggered. It would be smart on Disney’s part to not release the Johnson trilogy so close to 2017’s The Last Jedi. Only time will tell in this case, as things at Lucasfilm never seem to be one hundred percent set in stone.
